I recently realised that I used to accidentally meditate when I was seven.

I recently realised that I used to accidentally meditate when I was seven. It would occur during long car trips with my parents, usually from our house to my grandparents’ place.

I would be in the back seat alone with my Game Gear, its battery charger dangling all the way past the handbrake and gear stick, plugged into its source of power: the almighty cigarette lighter.

I’m not sure if what I now think was meditation was born out my frustrations with being unable to advance in the game Sonic Triple Trouble, or some other reason. I can’t remember.

It would start with me closing me eyes and peeling back in my mind all of the different levels of what I understood to be as life. A mantra, I suppose. I’d repeat to myself: ‘Imagine there is no Australia’.

‘Imagine there is no Earth’
‘No Moon’
‘No Mars’
‘No Sun’
‘No Solar System’
‘No Galaxy’
‘No Universe’

Eventually leading to:

‘Imagine there was nothing’.

By stripping back what I thought I knew about ‘everything’, I would reach my interpretation of ‘nothing’. I can’t remember what ‘nothing’ looked like in my head. Probably black. And silence, if you could see ‘silence’.

This train of thought would be rudely interrupted by an innocent ‘how are we doing back there, darling?’

My mother’s simple, caring question would immediately return me to the vey first level of life I’d eradicated in my mind, Australia.

I would be extremely frustrated by this, but had absolutely no way to convey the great calming void to my parents.
